Suita and Bankstown

Bankstown signed its first international sister city agreement with Suita City in March 1989. The agreement was signed by Clr Ian Stromborg, Mayor of Bankstown at that time, and Mr Tsuneo Kishida, the Mayor of Suita. Over the intervening years numerous youth exchanges have taken place, with Bankstown youth home-hosted in Japan and Suita youth home-hosted with families in Bankstown. With the assistance of local schools, visiting students are given the chance to experience all aspects of Australian life and culture

The primary objective of this youth exchange program is to encourage Bankstown and Suita youth to learn about each other's society and culture. It also gives students who are studying Japanese the opportunity to use their skills in an authentic environment.

After each exchange the participating students gather at Council Chambers to make presentations on any aspect of the exchange which particularly appealed to them. Popular themes at these presentations are the experience of living with a host family, the opportunity for self-development and a deep interest in the high school system of Japan.

Bankstown Council has also assisted Suita City in recruiting university graduates to work as English teachers in both the public and private eduction sectors in Japan. For job opportunities in our sister city of Suita please check the employment section of the Council's website or contact Council's Sister City Coordinator.
