Roads, Traffic and Drainage

A suburban street in Villawood

Roads and drainage are some of the basic infrastructure for which Council is responsible and on which the community relies.

The road network provides the primary means by which people and goods are moved through and around our City.  Road corridors also enable the essential services of water, electricity, gas, and telecommunications to be provided to properties.

The Bankstown road network consists of over 600 kilometres of local and regional roads that Council maintains and another 60 kilometres of main roads and motorways that are the responsibility of the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA).

The RTA is also responsible for the control of traffic on all New South Wales roads.  On local roads this traffic management function is delegated to Council.

The maintenance of a safe and efficient road network has always been a high priority for Council. The safety of all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists as well as all motor vehicles, requires appropriate traffic management in an environment of ever increasing numbers of vehicles on these roads.

Council also maintains a drainage system primarily for the road network and connecting to Sydney Water's trunk drains or natural creeks and rivers. Road drainage also contributes to driving safety and the system offers a level of protection from flooding during larger storms
