Mayor's Weekly Message

Wednesday 1 July 2009

This year, the Bankstown Historical Society reached an historic milestone, celebrating 50 years of collecting and preserving the history of our local government area. I was pleased to join with many familiar faces from across Bankstown to mark the occasion at a special anniversary luncheon last week at Bankstown Sports. During the lunch I had the honour of presenting the current President, Ken Willis, with a Life Membership to the Bankstown Historical Society in recognition of his leadership and almost 25 years service in the Society. Clr Glen Waud was also in attendance.

I attended the second meeting of the Australian Council of Local Government last week. The meeting was convened by the Prime Minister and followed on from the success of the inaugural meeting last year.  Under the theme 'Building Resilience in Local Communities’, the meeting brought together Mayors and Shire Presidents from across the country to discuss with Federal parliamentarians the current and emerging issues facing local government, including the challenges posed by the global economic recession. Once again, Bankstown will be the recipient of further funding.

Earlier this year, Council approved the establishment of a 12 month Mayoral Women's Cricket Development Fund. This fund is open for the period 1 July 2009 - 30 June 2010 and aims to assist high school-aged female cricketers develop in the game. My hope is that this small seed of assistance will result in significant longer term growth in women's cricket in our city. Applications forms are now available from Council's website.

I was pleased to speak last week at the launch of Bankstown Community Resource Group's book 'Bongo's Big Day Out'. The book was produced as part of their Baby Steps Literacy project that aims to introduce early childhood literacy practices to parents in Bankstown of 0-2 year olds by helping make a link between literacy and their everyday lives. Featured in the book are key locations across the city of Bankstown. Congratulations to BCRG on producing such a useful resource for families.

Woodville Community Services held their 7th Annual NAIDOC celebration at Villawood on Sunday. This year the theme was "Honouring our Elders, Nurturing our Youth" and the day included performances, indigenous food, dance workshops, information stalls and many other activities. Thank you to Deputy Mayor Khal Asfour for representing Council at the event. Clr Pam Gavin was also in attendance.

Emergency Services Minister Steve Whan MP joined me in officially opening this new facility which represents a significant boost in training and operational conditions for our local SES and will be the largest SES facility in NSW. Many local dignitaries were in attendance including Minister Joe Tripodi MP, Tony Stewart MP, Alan Ashton MP, Helen Westwood MLC, Daryl Melham MP, Deputy Mayor Khal Asfour, Councillors Linda Downey, Pam Gavin, Alex Kuskoff, Naji Najjar, Ian Stromborg, Michael Tadros and Allan Winterbottom, along with SES officials Greg Slater, Gary Jones, David Niven, Graham Tomkinson and Laurence White. The Recreation Sports & Aquatics Club (RSAC) held their presentation luncheon on the weekend and I was pleased to call in to acknowledge the efforts of the athletes. I pay tribute to the tremendous work of the management and volunteers of the RSAC in providing sporting and recreational activities for participants with intellectual disabilities. The luncheon was also attended by Linda Burney MP, Kaye Griffin MLC, Clr Pam Gavin and Clr Philip Sansom from Hurstville Council.

I was saddened by the recent passing of George Fisher, an elder of the Bankstown community. George was a great ambassador and mentor for the Aboriginal community, and a teacher of the traditional language. In a measure of the esteem in which George was held, Council and many other organisations called on his services to provide the "Welcome to Country" at official events. George was a very likeable man and highly regarded by all who knew him. He will be dearly missed. My deepest sympathies to his wife Helen and family. George is being remembered at a funeral service this morning where Deputy Mayor Khal Asfour is representing Council.

The Chinese Australian Services Society (CASS) provide a range of services to our Chinese speaking community and last week I attended an event they were holding celebrating the anniversary of their activity groups. A graduation ceremony was also held to acknowledge those volunteers who have completed their training to provide respite service for carers of people with dementia. Canterbury Council's Deputy Mayor Karl Saleh was also in attendance.

During the month of July, Council will team up with the Georges River Softball Association to encourage residents to come and try the sport of softball. A number of performances by local artists also entertained those there on the day.

Wednesday 13 May 2009

The past week has been a busy and exciting one for the City of Bankstown, with the opening of new community facilities and an unexpected visit by the Prime Minister, Hon. Kevin Rudd.

As mayor it was an honour to host the PMs Community Forum at the Bankstown Town Hall, on behalf of the City.  The forum was organised on behalf of the PM by our local federal members, Darryl Melham MP, member for Banks, and Jason Clare MP, Member for Blaxland, and their south-western Sydney colleagues. The aim of the Bankstown forum was to enable the PM to hear first-hand the issues and experiences facing community-based organisations in their endeavours to assist the unemployed.

During the forum Mr Rudd announced that he would be giving Bankstown Council $3.15M towards the construction of the new Arts Centre, and took a tour of the planned site.  This money, coupled with a $1.75M grant from Arts NSW means Council can begin work on rebuilding and refurbishing the existing Arts and Craft Centre into the new Bankstown Arts Centre.

Earlier that morning, I officially opened the new Nick Kearns House Youth Refuge in Mt Lewis.  Bankstown Council has spent the past few months, and $340 000 to renovate the former Betsey Women's Refuge into a modern, and purpose designed refuge for youth.  It is the first of the new facilities Council has completed as part of the CBD Renewal Program, and one which will provide safe and comfortable crisis accommodation for 12 to 18 year olds.  The centre continues to carry the name Nick Kearns in honour of the former councillor who helped support the program in its early days.  I was pleased that his son Marcus and other family members were able to be there for the opening.  Deputy Mayor Khal Asfour and Clrs Tadros, Stromborg and Winterbottom were also in attendance.

Later in the afternoon  I attended the Coolaburoo Neighbourhood Centre's new location at Padstow Park Progress Hall.  Former councillor and Deputy Mayor, Richard McLaughlin travelled to Sydney for the day as guest speaker, having been a long-time support of Coolaburoo's work within the community.

Thank you to Deputy Mayor, Clr Khal Asfour, for representing me recently at the launch of the Western Sydney Environment Calendar Art Exhibition at UWS.

A Belated Happy Mothers' Day to the thousands of mothers in our community.  Apart from spending time with my own mother, and enjoying the day with my own children, I was delighted to launch the motherhood edition of the Bankstown Youth Developments new magazine, Westside Jr.  The magazine titled Your Mum, features poems, short stories drawings and other images, primarily by high school aged young people, exploring the role and relationships of motherhood.  My congratulations to editor Mohammed Ahmad and BYDS for this initiative. Clr Kuskoff was also in attendance.

Bankstown Council has recently made available $15 000 worth of funding for local schools under its Eco-School Environmental Grants Program. I was pleased to welcome guests at Vesak Day celebrations at the Huyen Quang Temple in Chapel Road, Bankstown on Sunday. Vesak Day, commonly known as 'Buddha's birthday' is an important occasion for practicing Buddhists. The celebration was a great way for our community to appreciate our diversity and highlight the peacefulness that Buddhism embraces.

Wednesday 29 April 2009

ANZAC Day was commemorated on Saturday as our community came together at a number of deeply respectful ceremonies across Bankstown. Our country's diggers made an enormous sacrifice to ensure our freedom and on this day we salute our fallen heroes and acknowledge the men and women who currently serve in the armed forces. The large crowds in attendance indicated that the spirit of Anzac is very much alive.

This year I again began the day by joining members of the Bass Hill RSL at their annual march and Dawn Service along with Helen Westwood MLC, Clr Pam Gavin and Clr Alex Kuskoff. I then went on to the Chester Hill RSL ANZAC Day Service which was also attended by Minister Barbara Perry MP, Helen Westwood MLC and Councillors Gavin and Kuskoff. At the event Council also hosted a "Roadshow" information booth which provided residents the opportunity to speak with staff from across a variety of units on a range of Council related issues. In conjunction with this Council staff and Police were providing free information kits on preventing motor vehicle theft as part of Operation Bounceback.

This is the fourth year that Council has joined with Police and the Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council to teach residents about vehicle security and to help prevent the theft of motor vehicles. I hope everyone enjoyed their Easter long weekend break.

Vocalists from Bankstown's Talent Advancement Program made our city proud yesterday as they took to the stage and performed at the Royal Easter Show.  This is always a popular experience for our TAP members and my congratulations on representing Bankstown so successfully at the show.

Council, through its Bankstown Business Advisory Service, is hosting another of its business breakfasts on Wednesday 22 April, 7.15am at Birrong Bowling and Sports Club. The theme for discussions throughout the morning will focus on 'managing a business through difficult times: seven steps to be a successful business' with guest speaker Scott Flaxman, a senior business coach from Westpac. These breakfasts are a great opportunity for our local business community to receive expert advice as well as providing a platform to expand existing networks and share experiences with other professionals. For more information, or to book a place at the business breakfast contact Council on 9707 9228.

With the school holidays here, now is an ideal opportunity to explore the many facilities that are available within our city. Our four branch libraries at Bankstown, Chester Hill, Greenacre, Padstow and Panania will also be running an interesting school holidays program. Wednesday 1 April 2009

Bankstown City Council joined residents and businesses across the city in support of Earth Hour on Saturday. This annual worldwide event raises awareness on climate change and encourages everyone to take the practical steps that are needed to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. Turning off lights and non-essential appliances for just one hour sends a strong message that a little effort by many can create a global result. While this is a great first step, the challenge is to take this commitment even further and make some simple and inexpensive changes in your home or business to reduce your energy consumption.

I was saddened to learn of the recent passing of David Hopkins OAM. David was a well known figure in our community and an active member of the ex-service community. As a long serving Director of the City of Bankstown RSL, David gave tremendous service to our community and was also instrumental in the formation of the Kitchener Day Care Club. My deepest sympathies to the Hopkins family.

The Greater Western Sydney Economic Development Board with Council's assistance hosted the inaugural Sydney Aerospace & Defence Roundtable last week.  The purpose of the forum was to bring together industry leaders in the aviation, aerospace and defence sectors from across the Sydney metropolitan region. The discussions focused around employment in these sectors and consideration of ways to grow the number of jobs in the Sydney metropolitan region.  Bankstown is fortunate to be home to a number of larger employers in the aviation sectors and I was pleased to welcome delegates to this important forum and to encourage ongoing collaboration by industries and government.

Wednesday 11 March 2009

Last week I joined with members of the Kenneally family to celebrate the extraordinary life of Paddy Kenneally who recently passed away aged 93. A former wharfie, Paddy served as an Australian soldier, and as a member of the 2/2nd Independent Company fought to defend Timor against Japanese occupation during the Second World War. During the battle, the Timorese protected the Australian soldiers and in doing so, ensured their survival. Paddy felt a sincere debt of gratitude and devoted his life to repaying the Timorese for their support. He became an influential figure in the East Timorese independence campaign, speaking at rallies, travelling to East Timor on many occasions and raising funds locally for the building of schools. As late as last year, Paddy returned to Dili with his family to attend the Anzac Day service at the war memorial built by the veterans of his regiment. Paddy was well respected and this was indicated by the many local dignitaries in attendance at his funeral and the messages of condolences received from the leaders of East Timor. My deepest sympathies to the Kenneally family.

Bankstown has yet again proved how generous our community is through their donations towards the Australian Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal. The unprecedented extent of this disaster with such huge loss of life and property has been overwhelming and it is very heartening to see the wonderful response from our community. At last Tuesday's Ordinary Meeting, Council resolved to make a donation of close to $13,000 to the appeal. This donation, in conjunction with donations made by Council staff, will see Bankstown City Council donate almost $27,500 to the Australian Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal. Through these funds we can, in some small way, assist the survivors of these Victorian Bushfires in rebuilding their lives and communities.  Local residents who are interested in making a contribution are encouraged to contact the Australian Red Cross on 1800 811 700 or by visiting www.redcross.org.au.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this great initiative.

During the week I had the opportunity to attend Padstow North Public School's Student Representative Council (SRC) induction ceremony which was held to formally introduce and acknowledge the newly elected members for 2009.  SRCs are a great way to introduce young people to leadership and the basic principles of government and I congratulate the students on their election to the position.

As a Council, we have we've set ourselves many important goals for this year as we aim to deliver important local projects that will make living in our City even better. 2009 promises to be an exciting year with a range of activities throughout the year which I encourage you to take part in.

Over the coming months there is Clean Up Australia Day on 1 March is a great opportunity for neighbours, friends and groups to make a positive impact. March of course is also Seniors Week and the start of Youth Week and Council has organised a great line-up of events for both.

We will also be running our second annual Recreation Expo on Saturday 14 March, and our City is a host for the Women's Cricket World in Cup.  Several matches will be played at our very own Bankstown Memorial Oval providing an opportunity for everyone to the world's finest female cricketers.

The construction of the new SES Headquarters is progressing well and, once completed, we will officially open the new facility.

With the school year beginning, it is timely to refocus our attention on road safety, especially around schools. 40 Km/h zones are again in force, as are the parking restrictions around schools. Safety around schools is everybody's responsibility and I urge all drivers to take care for the express reason of protecting the safety of pedestrians - especially children.

The first buses began using the completed Bankstown Bus Corridor and Interchange on Monday morning. Transport Minister David Campbell MP joined me for the official opening as local dignitaries, business owners and commuters came together to celebrate the introduction of this improved transport link. The infrastructure will benefit the community by providing a modern bus and rail interchange link for Bankstown and improving pedestrian flow and traffic flow in the Plaza.

Our city has a proud tradition of volunteering and we are fortunate to have so many residents who regularly give up their time to help others. I am sure there are many in our community who wish to volunteer, however the problem that arises is knowing which organisations are seeking volunteers. To aid this process, Council has developed a volunteers page on our website will act as a register of agencies to help link people wishing to volunteer with organisations seeking volunteers. For more information about the site, visit www.bankstown.nsw.gov.au

Also that evening my family and I were amongst a large number of residents who attended Chester Hill's Christmas Carols at Chester Square.

Last Wednesday evening, I presented cheques to those community organisations that were successful in receiving funding through Council's Annual Community Grants Program. This year marks the 11th year of this program and saw a noticeable increase in the number of applications received. A total of $383, 000 was distributed throughout the community and will result in an array of projects and activities being throughout the city.

Earlier that day, Deputy Mayor Khal Asfour represented me at the Padstow North Public School's Presentation Day. My congratulations to those students who were acknowledged for their achievements. During the past four and a half years, we have worked together and instigated a range of initiatives with the aim of improving our city for all. We have been pursuing a range of urban renewal projects, including the current development of the Bankstown CBD and local town centre improvements - a program which over the next few years will continue to be rolled out across our local government area. During this time Council has spent close to $120 million on capital works projects, distributed close to $1.7 million through our community grants program and introduced a range of policies and strategies aimed at assisting Council meet the needs of our residents. Council has also recently resolved to provide assistance to local small business operators through the establishment of a new business advisory service as well as agreeing to the formation of a Residents' Panel as a two-year pilot project.

Unfortunately, the Bankstown Relay for Life, which was scheduled to take place last weekend, was postponed due to wet weather. The event will be rescheduled with a new date to be advised in the near future.

Wet weather also saw the cancellation of Saturday's final of the Group 3 Bankstown City Cup at the Greyhound Social Club. On Saturday evening my husband, Alex Kuskoff and I attended the 34th Bankstown Basketball Bruins Annual Dinner at the Bankstown Sports Club. During the evening I had the opportunity to acknowledge the Bruins' achievements throughout the year and assist with the presentations.
