Industry and the Environment

Lucas Ck

In the past five years fundamental changes to the State's environmental legislation and the environmental management responsibilities of Council has driven the development of the environmental review of industrial premises. Bankstown Council's commitment to the environment and its heavily industrialised character has attracted major environmental projects to the area.

These include:

  • Auto Dismantlers Environmental Review & Education Project - 1997
  • Urban Stormwater Management In Local Council Operations - 1999
  • CARE Companies Aware and Responsible for the Environment Project - 1999/2000
  • Cooks River Environmental Assessment and Education Project - 2000

Additionally, Bankstown Council initiated an 'Environmental Review of Industry Program'  in conjunction with the introduction of the 'Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997' in July 1999.

Bankstown is a predominantly urban environment with residential, industrial, commercial, and special uses (schools, railways etc.), constituting 85% of the land use. The remaining 15% is used for parks and recreation.
