Free mulch and native plants

Council is helping residents to play their part in promoting biodiversity in their own backyard by giving away free locally native plants to Bankstown residents.

Date: Saturday 24 October, 9am - 1pm.
Place: Council Waste Management Facility, Bransgrove Road, Panania.

There is a limit of up to a trailer load of mulch and four native plant seedlings per household. Resident will need to show proof of a Bankstown LGA address upon entry. By law, trailer loads of mulch must be covered during transport.

Please note: the mulch has been generated through Council's tree maintenance program and has not been certified to meet Australian standards.

Expressions of interest for 'City Garden'

Are you interested in growing your own fruit and vegies but don't have the space?

After the success of the 'Backyard Bites' environmental stall at Council's food festival, the Sustainable Development Unit are trying to gauge the level of community interest in a community garden, or 'City Garden', in the Bankstown CBD.

The garden would allow residents to grow their own fruit and vegetables, share gardening skills and make new friends at the same time.

If you are a keen gardener and would like to be involved in a 'City Garden', please take the time to let us know. We also welcome interest from community and school groups.

Please contact Gemma Bennett, Environmental Projects Officer on 02 9797 9095 or gemma.bennett@bankstown.nsw.gov.au.

Council is reducing its ecological footprint!

Chester Hill Community Centre is the first of Bankstown Council's public facilities to receive solar panels and is apart of Councils ongoing strategic commitment to reduce greenhouse emissions by 2% per annum. The solar panels will produce enough electricity to provide for all of the centre's lighting needs.

By producing renewable energy the centre will be less reliant on coal fired power stations and will prevent 8 tonnes of CO2 emissions - the equivalent of taking 2 cars off the road or planting 32 trees. A solar rebate from the Federal Government was received to fund this project.

Council has initiated a number of other sustainable projects this year including:

  • Installation of solar panels at Anzac St Depot
  • A waterless urinal trial for Civic Tower
  • Increasing the number of Council rainwater tanks. Council now has a total of 40 rainwater tanks across all of its sites with a total storage capacity of over 1 million litres
  • Actively conducting lighting retrofits in its works depots and installs of energy efficient office equipment
  • Implementation of a fuel efficient lawn mower trial with Council's Park Staff

By working towards a more sustainable environment Council has been awarded:

  • 5 star NABERS (National Australian Built Environment Rating System) rating for the Civic Tower
  • 4 stars for strategic water management by Sydney Water

Volunteers needed for River Health Study!

The Georges River Combined Councils Committee (GRCCC) has received funding to conduct a catchment wide river health monitoring program. There are 2 community sites within the Bankstown Government area that we are inviting you to help us monitor this Spring:

        1. Morgan's Creek Estuary - Saturday 31st October, 9am - 12noon.
        2. Yeramba Lagoon - Sunday 1st November, 9am - 12noon.

We are encouraging schools, streamwatch groups, volunteer groups and the general community to get involved in assessing the health of the Georges River. All sampling events will be supervised and run by Council staff and all equipment will be provided. Morning tea will also be provided.

To find out more information about this event call Councils GRCCC Project Manager on 02 9707 9700 or click here. More information about the Mid Georges River Sustainability Initiative can be found on Councils website.
