Get involved in your local environment!

Are you interested in becoming a Bushcare volunteer? Council's Bushcare program gives residents the opportunity to learn about bushland in their local area and play a part in restoring it to its former glory. Council also runs a range of environmental events such as workshops, guided walks, planting days and plant giveaways throughout the year.
The Bushcare calendar contains meeting dates, times and locations for all our local Bushcare groups.
Streamwatch is another great opportunity to volunteer - groups of local students and residents monitor the water quality of our local creeks and rivers.
Backyard Buddies - Are the native animals that share our built-up areas, waterways, backyards and parks. Backyard Buddies are also the people who value native animals and plants, and want to protect and help them. You can be a Backyard Buddy. You don't have to join a club, or sign a form. All you have to do is care - and do a few simple things to make a difference.

Green living

It's easy to reduce the impact your lifestyle has on the Environment. Simply reduce the amount of water and energy you use, plant native plants, compost your waste, use fewer chemicals in your home and garden, be more aware of what you put in your shopping trolley or make sure your pets don't have a negative impact on the environment.

Contaminated land
The land within Bankstown has many different uses including residential development, agricultural, industrial, and commercial purposes. Some of these uses may cause land to become contaminated due to generation of waste products and the use of chemicals, oils and fuels. If land is contaminated, it can have serious effects on human health and the environment. You can visit the contaminated land page for more information on this important topic.

Confused by environmental jargon?
Eco-Lingo!
Biodiversity - is the Web of life - the thin skin of living things, including us, which inhabits the surface of planet Earth. Biodiversity includes humans, animals, plants, fungi and microbes - from dugongs to daisies, toadstools to termites. This variety of life has evolved over hundreds of millions of years.
Biodiversity Corridor - linking habitat (native trees, shrubs, grasses etc) so that plants and animals can continue to get their food, water, shelter and reproduce.
Habitat - The natural environment in which an animal or plant normally lives.
Threatened Species - species under threat of survival. Other categories within this group are:
- Extinct - no longer living anywhere on earth
- Endangered - a species that is in danger of extinction
- Vulnerable - a species that may soon become endangered
or - Our glossary should help you sort out what’s what!
