Bankstown is home to Australia's busiest general aviation airport, vibrant retail and wholesale sectors, a major concentration of manufacturing jobs i for the Sydney metropolitan region and a resient population estimated at 180,000. The post-WW2 period proved the catalyst for much of the City's economy, which includes industry leaders in metals tooling engineering & fabrication, paint & aeronautics manufacturing, and automotive service and repair. Employment in Bankstown
There is approx. 7,300 businesses operating from the Bankstown LGA with a estimated total workforce of more than 58,600. The largest employer by industry sector is manufacturing which employs 15,300 staff. Other highlights of local employment include:
- an estimated 91.5% of local businesses employ 20 staff or less i.e. are SMEs
- 59.8% of the City's workforce are male; 40.2% are female
- 33.8% of the workforce are aged 15-34; 38% are aged 35-49; 28% are aged 50yrs & older

- there has been an increase in employment of 1,200 jobs in the local transport, logistics and warehousing sectors
- there has been an increase in employment of 1,100 jobs in the local banking, finance and business services sectors
- there has been an increase in employment of 1,100 jobs in the local health care and education & training sectors
- over this period and based on the ABS 2001 and 2006 census data, there has been a net loss of 2,600 jobs in Bankstown
These employment trends would seem to confirm the City's manufacturing community are "re-tooling" from a high volume-lower skills production platform to a technology driven-innovation based manufacturing process.
Rising fuel and energy costs continue to strengthened Bankstown's credentials as a centre of distribution excellence for companies requiring immediate access to metropolitan, national and international markets.
Resident Employment Data
65,265 residents of Bankstown are employed; 18,785 are employed by companies that operate from Bankstown. Highlights of working resident data are:
- 13.6% are employed in the manufacturing sector, which indicates a large proportion of the City's manufacturing workforce resides in Fairfield, Liverpool, Campbelltown and Sutherland
- 13.2% are employed in the Sydney CBD
- 8.4% are employed in the health care and social assistance sectors
- 16.3% reported their occupation as Technicans and Trade-workers; this is marginally higher than the Sydney average of 12.7%
- (at the time of the Census) the local unemployment rate was 7.5%; the unemployment rate for the broader Sydney region was 5.3%
- two thirds of residents travel to work by motor vehicle i.e. as a driver or passenger
- over the 2001-2006 period, there has been a modest increase of 655 residents employed
