Bushland and Trees

Eucalypts at Lansdowne

Within Bankstown there are 524.2 hectares of bushland consisting of 276.2 hectares in Council reserves, 174 hectares in the Georges River National Park, and 74 hectares on private land or State Government Land.

It is the variation in soils and geological formations in the region that has produced such a range of vegetation communities. The most dominant of which are Cumberland Plain Woodland and Sydney Sandstone Ridgetop Woodland.

Our bushland has been and remains under threat. Only a small percentage of the original bushland of the area remains. For this reason, Council has placed an emphasis on managing our bushland to ensure it is protected and enhanced.

This section currently contains information on:

  • Council's Tree Preservation Order and information for Pruning or Removing Trees - If you are planning on pruning or removing a tree on your property, you need to read this information as you may need to apply to Council for permission. Substantial penalties of up to $100,000 will apply for the illegal pruning or removal of trees.
  • Council's Bushcare program - a volunteer program that encourages people to become involved in looking after Bankstown's bushland. As Bushcare is a community-based program, it's a wonderful opportunity to meet other residents while doing something worthwhile for the local environment. You will learn valuable skills, develop new friendships, discover more about local flora and fauna and gain a sense of satisfaction on seeing the rehabilitation of a reserve.
  • Tips on how to be a 'Better Bushland Neighbour' - If you are lucky enough to own a property that is near bushland, you need to take extra to make sure you don't have a negative impact on our natural areas.
